My doctor wouldn’t believe it either, lol “sorry I forgot to call you back for that referral, if it helps I also forgot to eat today” “ma’am your chart says you’re obese.” Realizing I needed therapy instead of a dietitian was eye opening, but also learning about ADHD related eating disorders in women with ADHD was kind of that missing piece. Binge eating, compulsive eating, obsessive snacking, eating out of boredom and need for stimulation, self medicating with carbs (snacks and desserts often but not always at night) to feel calm, not being aware of internal cues like hunger or feeling full - leading to skipped meals or overeating to the point of feeling “stuffed”… these things are all super common in women with ADHD. Understanding that my struggle was more than just bad habits also meant meeting an ADHD coach who explained to me that my body was trying to give me the fats my brain needed to function better, by giving me cravings and urges for unhealthy things, but what I really needed as a woman with ADHD was a ketogenic diet filled with healthy fats; avocado, nuts, seeds, olive oil, fatty fish, full fat Greek yogurt, olives, coconut oil, cacao nibs, whole eggs, real butter, cheese, those are all believed to be healthy fat sources for a ketogenic diet. I’m still trying to make the ketogenic diet work because it takes planning and consistency, two things we severely struggle with, but on the days when I make healthy fats the biggest part of my diet my brain just feels like it works better. The ADHD coach said it would take time to see the changes in my body, but my reward of less severe ADHD symptoms would come more quickly. Thanks for the laugh <3 and I hope this bit of info dumping brings you comfort on your journey in life.
