Hack Procrastination

Hello there! I see a lot of comments on being stuck when needing to clean or whatever. I wanted to share a new hack I learned called the rule of 17. Basically when you are super overwhelmed and just not motivated but you know you need to get stuff done, you agree to doing 17 things. The number 17 is ADHD friendly as in it isn’t too big or too small. It’s just right. We can all do 17 things. So for example: if you have laundry to put away: I say ok I just have to put away 17 things. When I get done with the 17 things I have finished my task! Woohoo! That’s a win! What normally happens though is 17 is just the right amount to kick my brain into driving mode and I’ll go on to complete more tasks. I almost never stop at 17. I always end up doing way more. So that’s a bonus! Woohoo another win! I also find that putting on some over the ear headphones and playing some kind of dance/electronic type music to wake my brain up and kick it into a flow. Love this! Thanks for sharing!!! 17 may be hard for me but I feel like if I set my mind to tackle like 12 individual items, that could turn me into action mode and I’d do more at the end of that burst.

That number, 17, sounds overwhelming to me. Unless it’s 17 seconds haha. I try to beat it by doing like the first thing needed to complete the task. I don’t think about completing it. Just the first step. So, if I want to check my email, I open my laptop. That’s it. If I feel like it, I can go to gmail in the browser. If not, I just walk away and try to feel good about taking that first step, and being good with it even if I don’t continue later. But continuing later seems easier, because then it’s just another first step, ya know? The second step becomes the first. Etc. Not sure if that makes sense…

I can’t handle 17. That is too high. 5 is my magic number. 5 minutes of cleaning in 5 different rooms. I’ll hang up 5 things. Wash 5 dishes.
