ADHD condition worsened after diagnosis

For those that were diagnosed as adults, did you find your conditions / symptoms got worse once you were formally diagnosed? My fiancée and I feel like mine have become more apparent and worse since I was diagnosed and I’m trying to put my finger as to why.

It’s not worse, but more recognisable I think.

Yeah I got diagnosed last year at age 19 and I dont need to mask my thinking, my emotions and just"me" anymore so I literally CANT MASK anymore which makes my "symptoms" worse. I dont think that the are worst i think that they are more noticeable now cause we lost the ability to hide them. Now we now that we are different and that masking isn't necessary so we don't mask and forget how to mask. If you get what I mean :,)

I recently got diagnosed because I finally went to talk therapy which was prompted by worsened symptoms. I think the adult pursuit of awareness and diagnosis was prompted by that. I agree about now being hyper aware.

I had this feeling too, but my theory is that: now I'm completely aware. I can identify the symptoms and the triggers, because I know what it is. I believe it might cause this feeling. At least, that's how I feel when I think of something similar.

I think diagnosis can be stressful, even when it comes as a relief. Behaviours that we may have glossed over or distracted ourselves from get dragged kicking and screaming into the limelight; they're more visible, they're taking up more brain space, and we're learning to relate to them in new ways. Maybe the brain wants to see them in action armed with this new knowledge and start piecing together a fresh paradigm, no? Or maybe it's just a wee bit overloaded, making inhibitory behaviour less accessible to it. Although it's easier said than done, I hope you can accept it as part of your process, and observe it with curiosity and self-compassion.

After realising whole family most likely has it, I feel we have unleashed some uncontrolled chaos that is kinda put our lives on hold with this diagnosis crap that takes forever to complete. Health queue and self-awareness with all the mind-race that is in my head trying to put words on my feelings that don't come out when I need it to be said to the terapaut.

When I got my diagnosis, I felt like I could finally drop the mask. I had a reason that I was the way I was. I’m still learning about my diagnosis too!

I kind of feel this way. Since I learned to better handle my ptsd I noticed my adhd really came out in full force. It’s like my ptsd was masking my adhd. Now I’m learning to manage my adhd. I’m almost 50yo!!!!

I felt the same way, but it’s not like this. I just realize all the symptoms of ADHD which I didn’t recognize before or thought they are some quirky behaviors.

I am the same. @everything you said Seasonal conditions could play a factor. Financials, Grief, Something Unexpected would seem to make it worse. Yes! Hopefully the app will have a voice plug-in feature connected to Siri/Google/etc. Maybe: add to your check list to Review the reminders app in your phone(if you have one) and you can list your car thoughts in one of your phone apps that support voice command. For me, the iPhone has a reminders list that I could voice operate. Will be trying this out! I pray it works out with your fiancée.

i felt the same way at first, but then realized that nothing really changed, more things were just pointed out, which created the illusion that it was getting worse

Hi Sir Smiley. I think the issue could be the idea that you haven’t fully accepted the diagnosis. Maybe it brought on extra worries as to how the past could’ve been had you known sooner? Have you done any research as far as how to combat/manage it?(I am in this stage of learning and applying strategies. So far.. This app is tremendously supportive!!)
