Meds struggle
Id like to be able to do things and I’ve been upset because I tried medication for the first time and I didn’t notice any difference. I had a meltdown about it because I was so excited about things being easier 😣

For my ADHD, my first one did not let me feel any emotions. CRAZY. Then I tried Ritalin and it didn’t help either. It wasn’t until the 3rd medicine truly worked. It’s like us neurodivergent have to expect to experiment cause it’s hard to know and find what works For my BPD, my first meds didn’t let me feel joy (anhedonia) but my depressions weren’t too low? Not worth it… but it took 6 MONTHS to finally have my psychiatrist switch it to something new Hang in there!! It’s truly trial and error. All we can do is take notes and be forward about it with the psychiatrist. It gets better (:
Such an excellent and encouraging response 🫂 I’m in a similar boat in so far as I have yet to be put on ADHD meds because I was diagnosed with PMDD and they are treating that currently. The ADHD specialists are overbooked at my UNI so I will have to find one after I finish my PhD end of Fall Quarter.
My medication doctor kept trying to make Wellbutrin work because I was already taking it and it is an off-label ADHD medication. It was only after I switched management doctors that I got on something for ADHD. I haven’t started it yet but I am hoping it works. Honestly, I’m expecting what you were expecting, but based on my last experience, I’m also prepared to be disappointed. Sometimes it just takes a few times. Also, I do know some medication requires a buildup, so you may want to ask your doctor about that, too.
I’ve been on wellbutrin for a while. I did notice a little bit of a difference, especially making me feel less depressed (it’s an antidepressant at the end of the day. But yeah, what I’ve always looked for is an improvement of my executive dysfunction, but I’m still hoping something will help with that.
Which medication did you try? I started with medication last year and my doc had me try Ritalin first. Started with a small dose and then raised it to the maximum dose in several steps. Absolutely no effect for me - nothing good, nothing bad. Then I tried Elvanse (Lisdexamphetamine) and it was completely different from the start. He also started me on a low dose and that wasn’t enough, but even there I felt an effect. Raised it in weekly increments to what felt right and I take that for a year now and it’s definitely a game changer for executive function when it comes to boring tasks. Don’t let this first "unsuccessful“ try get you down - knowing what doesn’t work is still a success. Just keep trying until you find the one that’s right for you 🍀
Tysm for your comment, it made me feel a lot better 🫶🏻 (made me cry lol) I actually got prescribed lisdexanphetamine! 30 mg. And I felt some side effects like a bit of anxiety and headaches. But I was expecting to have less executive functioning issues and it did nothing in that regard and I was absolutely devastated haha. Especially because it made my senses a bit more sensitive (I’m already autistic) and I didn’t realize soon enough, only clocked it after I had an autistic meltdown. I originally was prescribed methylphenidate but it was impossible to find, i think there’s a nation wide shortage. So I’m a bit upset about that still because the only thing I can really do is up the dosage but it’s not ideal. Sorry about the infodump, but thank you again! Your comment made me feel less alone and a bit more hopeful
Methylphenidate is a monthly worry for me if it delivers and if they give me the correct brand (that actually makes a difference, which is wild) ~ I have to ration it which isn’t the way I deserve to treat my mental health but it’s the reality of being on that medication ☹️ Also, once you get on stimulants, it’s hard to go back to non-stimulants to treat ADHD (I’ve heard) As someone with a family history of heart health issues, Methylphenidate should not be my long term answer I hope something in this info dump helps to not be as upset about methylphenidate as it’s not a smooth ride to be on it
