Therapy Appointment

I feel really nervous towards my therapy appointment next Friday as there are lots of arrows pointing towards a misdiagnosis. While I feel good on my meds because they help me control my impulsiveness and they add an antidepressant I really struggle with things that are not related to the diagnosis I have while I’ve done so much research on ADHD hence why I’m here trying this App and forum. How would you approach this situation? My diagnosis is BPD but I don’t match the DSM criteria only the impulses and emotional regulation struggles.

Well first I want to validate your feelings, it’s scary any time you have to go in and be vulnerable to someone who helps control what kind of healthcare you get. So I totally get that. But also, every time I’ve had to do this it’s been fine. No matter what the outcome was, I always felt better after bringing it up and getting it out there in the open.

If the medications are having a positive effect, then communicate this to your doctor. Many medications are prescribed to treat different struggles. The fact that you are feeling a positive outcome probably indicates that there is balance in the current medications for your body. I’m my experience, most doctors would be thrilled to have that result and would leave you on the medications. Of course I can’t speak for all doctors, but if you’ll explain that you’re feeling like these are really helping, I’d guess that they’ll at least say let’s keep going for a few months to see how your body/mind react and then see if we need to change things up or not.
