Focus at work

Anyone else struggle to stay on task at work? The smallest little thing will distract me and I’m gone for a little while. I’m having to work late all the time to hit my KPIs and I know it’s just because I’m so distracted 🙈

I get distracted a lot. I set goals for each block of time that I have and force myself to stick to that one task during that time

Yasss! I'll be working hard and then an imagined vacation will pop in my head and I'll need to research and create an itinerary for the whole trip just in case. 2 hours go by and I'm like Dammit!

Time blocking my work day, setting time completion goals and timing myself has helped me recently 🙌🏼🤓🎉

I used to work in an open office layout. I would get distracted by myself and then just when I’d get on task again someone would interrupt with a random question or whatever. The best thing I could find that helped a bit was sound cancelling headphones. And eventually I asked to move to a quieter spot ( I was in the area where everyone walked by to get to the main hall.) At one point I added up all the extra hours that I stayed and it was about half of my regular hours 😬. That’s my time and I was giving it to them for free. Not a health thing to do.

Me too! Having dedicated space away from others is so helpful! If I wear my headphones, people assume I’m in a meeting and leave me alone!

Same! I have been struggling as well and have been getting in trouble lately. I’m trying to see if I can get some accommodations or something.

Have you tried the Pomodoro method? That's what I use. I just pull up the Pomodoro Timer web page and add my tasks right there. Then it's 25 minutes where I know exactly what I'm focused on. The 5 minute breaks in between pomodoros gives me just enough time to get my brain firing but not so long that I get sidetracked.

I found that body doubling with people online really helps me stay focused. I can recommend a few places if you’re interested.

Basically you kinda work together but not together. So just having someone physically “present” so you feel accountable. Can do via an online meeting and just work on camera with someone else or many someones doing the same on their own tasks. (Keeps as many people from bothering you as well if they see you have a meeting open on a second screen)

What is body doubling?

I’ve been fired from my last 3 jobs because of this very issue so I will be interested in reading any helpful comments

I'm disabled but I am like that around the house. I'll see something on a table that belongs in the bedroom and as I walk thru the house to put it in the bedroom, I see something else I left unfinished in the diningroom so I put the first thing done, do the thing in the diningroom, go to put those things where they need to be and find other things...I'll do 15 things before I finally make it back to the first item I found on the table and realize just how nuts this ADHD thing really is! I can't even imagine how you guys manage with actual jobs! I feel for you.

Yeah, I’m struggling really bad with work right now. Even worse I don’t get paid for time I am not actually doing work, so my paycheques have been taking a hit as well 😭
