I was diagnosed with ADHD about 3 weeks ago. I have been feeling a lot of grief. My doctor prescribed Ritalin. How can you tell if a medication is working? I feel I can think faster but still very distracting. Any advice?

Many people say caffeine helps with ADHD. My mind goes 90 to nothing all day long. Caffeine makes my body try to keep up with my mind. I prefer meds because it slows my brain down to the speed of my body. I will say that when I started on Vyvanse I looked at my husband and said “I know the kids are playing and safe, but I don’t hear EVERY word they are saying, is this normal?” He said it’s called tuning it out. I just looked at him and said I had never been able to do that. It was a game changer!!!

ritalin made me SUPER anxious so I knew it wasn’t for me.. if you have a day without it and symptoms get worse then you know it’s helping? I think too it helps to have a goal in mind 😊

I was diagnosed in September at age 58 and I have had to process the grief from now realizing why I had so many problems with adulting. I have always felt like there was something fundamentally wrong with me because I didn’t live up to the expectations of my family and society. Now, I understand that my brain works differently which is a huge revelation but the loss connected to the “what if’s” has been tough. I have taken time to grieve and it’s getting better now. Medication has been a game changer for me. I saw improvement immediately. Stick with it, advocate for yourself and don’t let anyone, including medical professionals keep you from getting the help you need. Talk to your doctor, ask lots of questions, and don’t settle for results that fall short. Good luck. It is an adventure once the grieving subsides!
