Is ADHD superpower or disability?

So like, what do you think about when some ppl like influencers and certain celebs with ADHD say that ADHD is a “superpower” or like something good, like they wouldn’t even wanna get rid of it? It makes me sooo mad when I hear that, coz there’s nothing good about ADHD. I’ve asked lots of adults who are ADHD experts if there’s anything good with ADHD and they all say the diagnosis is only based on what they call “suffering” – like everything that makes u have ADHD is bad – nothing is good. But then they say ppl with ADHD can still have lots of good sides just like anyone else can – so u can be a skilled person who does really well at some things despite having ADHD – not because of ADHD. ADHD sucks and I would get rid of it straight away if I could. What do u think?

I think ADHD is either good or bad. Some of the distractions from ADHD can be that I have a hard time staying tuned in to task that I don’t particularly like to do. However, I have found it has been very helpful when assigned to different teams at work. Sometimes having ADHD allows me a different perspective and I can see things that might happen with the project that other people don’t. Also, because I notice all the details, I am more apt to see if something is going to go wrong before it happens so we can fix it before it does. I think like any trait or skill it’s how you choose to use it that matters.

It's not adhd a super power. I think the super power is to accept and know the weakness and strength of oneself and find a way to use them as our superpower

Just like people with eye issues can have a super power when it comes to listening and perceiving. But the power is never the blindness itself. I think it's acceptance and realize the potential within

Ok that is a better way to see it i guess but i still dont like to call it superpower - its like a trend i think that people don’t want to talk about problems anymore and i think maybe its harder to do something about a problem if you don’t first accept that it is a problem and call it something else.

Going to chime in on this. I am a therapist and have many ADHD clients. I work with a lot of kids and teenagers. The first thing I tell them is “you have a gift, if you Chanel it in the right direction.” It’s usually the opposite message they have been given and often their self esteem has already been so damaged from all the negative interactions they have already had. There is not a single one that wasn’t smart and their grades have nothing to do with it. Maybe some are average but in my experience most are above average. Depression and anxiety are often results of things not being handled well by the adults in their life. Either they don’t believe they really have struggles and don’t get them help or they don’t acknowledge adhd as a real thing. At least 80% of people with ADHD have trauma from being misunderstood and subsequently mistreated as kids. Adults get treatment for trauma, depression and anxiety because often their adhd was missed. If kids can understand how their brain works differently and not less than, and learn to validate their worth and appreciate their “superpower” they can avoid becoming adults with significant depression and anxiety. Mood fluctuations are part of it but getting stuck there is the issue that creates clinical depression and anxiety. Learning to believe in and validate yourself and that you are capable of doing anything you put your mind to is huge. Struggles are still there but so are answers and strategies. Learning those early makes them more resilient and able to handle life’s challenges with grace and compassion for themselves as well as others. All of the struggles and setbacks can be turned into a setup for success. I’m pretty good at what I do because I’ve lived it and I get it.

The thing is that in Sweden the only thing kids with ADHD hear is that we have superpowers and it’s crazy cuz ADHD is only a problem for me. I would soo much just be a normal kid don’t need to have strategies for just living a normal life. Our prisons is like most people with ADHD and also social welfare / most people with ADHD. You don’t need welfare and are put i. Jail if you have superpowers - you get there cuz you have really big problems.

But i dont get it. If we are better then people that not have adhd cuz adhd is a superpower - why are not the people without ADHD that have special needs and we that support them? Why do we need meds but they don’t? It’s like note very logic. And if you look att the things that Psychologists look at then they decide who Will have the diagnos it’s ONLY bad things.

If you think about the common elements in a superhero story, which is usually that they have some hardship they need to overcome, then yes, dealing with ADHD can be a superpower. I know when I am good at something, I am very good at it, and that even though I was diagnosed only two years ago, I developed a lot of my own coping mechanisms before then. I also disagree about people with ADHD being less intelligent and no offense meant to your uncle, but there are still many professionals who are stuck in the old ways of thinking. Lots of young girls did not get a diagnosis because they did well in school, myself included.

The thing I don’t like about ADHD is the constant racing thoughts or the ADHD paralyzing. You know when you get in this funk that your brain and your body can’t move even though you have stuff to do. you can’t. I like it when i can hyper focus on stuff. I get a lot of stuff done very fast. I’m really good at research because I can focus on one thing at a time. For a long period of time. It’s not cool sometimes. When You have an interest in Scientology. The people around me are freaked out. It Doesn’t mean you’re gonna join ppl. 🤦‍♀️ Ask me again in a 2 months if I still want to learn everything about it . The answer will be no. I am over it. On to something else new and shiny. I can’t organize anything even if my life depended on it. I see other people organizing and it’s so easy for them organizing it’s like pulling teeth for me and I can’t keep it up for long. I was told that ADHD runs in families. that explains why my family fight a lot. I mean verbal. I hear when a ADHD person is trying to fight with you. (verbally ) that they’re looking for a dopamine hit to help them quiet the brain. Not to actually fight with you.

I am good at connecting with people and adapting to their needs, I read in an article that that when there is a natural disaster or emergency the person you wanna be with is someone that has ADHD or anxiety disorder. we tend to already think about the outcome and I already have a solution we’re good in a crisis situation.

I study psychology and I also have ADHD, I know it can be VERY frustrating sometimes, but I'm going to tell you some things that can make you see things in a more positive way. Did you know that people with ADHD typically have higher IQs? People with ADHD can be very productive when they do something they LOVE and have hyperfocus on it. We're also more creative and attentive to people, because we often notice things that no one else pays attention to!! ADHD is not about not having focus, it's about us focusing on several things at the same time doing that sometimes we are easily distracted and have difficulty with things we don't really like. ADHD shouldn't be a burden or seen as a problem, but that we are people who think outside the box and sometimes people don't understand us, you are capable of doing anything you want, just believe in your potential

The thing for me is: I’m a translater between the worlds of people who are Neurodivergent and Neurotypical and I’m somebody who knows things. A secretary who has been really professional in not telling stuff has mentioned once: “the good thing about you is: I have never to tell you but still you know everything.” And yeah, that is a kind of superpower. You listen to people and you know, what they are talking about, even if they stop talking. I’m good in connecting with people, and adapting with their needs. What part of it is because of trauma and what is ADS? I’ve no clue, sorry. But there are people out there who call me an angel ‘cause I ask for their mental health always at the right time.

You said, you would get rid of, if you could. To be honest, I’m close to 50 know, I don’t think, I would enjoy it for very long to be neurotypical - it seems to be hyper boring. I would take it for half a year to bring structure in lots of stuff though. 🫣☺️

I talked to my uncle that is a psychologist about this things and he said mostly the opposite from what you write. He said that people with ADHD have close to the same iq then people that have not got ADHD but it’s very little difference but he also told me that people with ADHD have like less normal intelligence. I don’t remember what he said exactly but it something that he said I was like typical ADHD person cuz then they test my iq (and not to brag but it’s high 🤗😬) I have like very high points in things like logic and understanding of words and stuff but normal people with high points in logics have high points in every part of the test but i have not cuz I’m like average for my age then they test my mental speed or what the called it and my working memory but logic was like very high and that is a ADHD thing he said - that people with ADHD have lien different levels in different types of intelligence but normal people have like the same intelligence all over or something like that. I can ask him to write it down cuz I can have mixed something up but this is what I remember.
